Insurance Tips For Making a Storm Claim

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County we work closely with many Insurance companies. One in particular is American Family Insurance. Here are some tips from them on making a storm damage claim.

Act Quickly. Filing a claim with your insurance company in a timely matter is very important. Most insurance policies limit your time to file a claim, so being quick is essential. You will want to repair the damage before it has a chance to get worse.

Review your policy. Every insurance policy and claim is different. If you know what your policy covers, you will be better prepared to plead your case.

Document everything. Keep a log of the storm and the damage. Do NOT start to clean up until you have documented as much of the damage as is safe and wait to handle the big messes until a claims adjuster has assessed the situation.

Mother nature likes to shake things up and if your home didn't weather a storm as well as you'd hoped it would, keep these tips in mind to help you along the way.

If you have experienced storm damage in your home or business call SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County at 947-9931. We specialize in finding, assessing and repairing damage from storms!

Fire Safety For Kids

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County we care about the safety of your family. By sharing this information from the American Red Cross, we hope to shed some light on something we see too often, house fires.

A home fire is a devastating event, and one that you never count on happening. Your children are most at risk when this disaster occurs. Unfortunately, many home fires are started by children playing with dangerous household items – especially lighters and matches. Taking sensible precautions in the home and teaching your child how to escape from a fire can help your family avoid this type of heartbreak.

Prevent Your Child from Starting Fires

The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that $280 million in property is destroyed each year as the result of children playing with fire.

  • Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances in a secured location out of your child’s reach. Only use lighters with child-resistant features.
  • Invest in flameless candles. These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your child knocking over a candle.

Important Fire Safety Tips

6/23/2020 (Permalink)

According to statistical data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in 2012 an estimated 1,375,500 res were responded to in the United States. These blazes caused 2,855 deaths and 16,500 civilian injuries while costing more than $12.4 billion in damage.

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips, courtesy of the NFPA, can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home.

1. Watch your cooking - Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Never allow young children around the stove or oven, especially if they are not closely attended.

2. Give space heaters space - Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.

3. Smoke outside - If you must smoke inside, have a sturdy, deep ashtray. Never smoke in bed.

4. Keep matches and lighters out of reach - Keep matches and lighters in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.

5. Inspect electrical cords - Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

6. Be careful when using candles - Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow them out before you leave the room or go to sleep.

7. Have a fire escape plan - Make a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

8. Install smoke alarms - Install alarms on every level of your of ooffice or home and inside bedrooms. Interconnect them so they all sound at once.

9. Test smoke alarms - Test alarms once per month. Replace batteries once per year or as needed.

10. Install sprinklers - Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance of saving your property.

And always remember SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County is available 24/7. (219)947-9931

Conditions In Lake County Might Be Right For Mold

6/22/2020 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 947-9931

What to Do:

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

The Difference Between a Watch and a Warning

5/28/2020 (Permalink)

With the severe weather season underway, now is a good time to go over the difference between tornado and severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.

A WATCH means that the potential exists for the development of severe thunderstorms or tornadoes, depending upon the specific type of watch issued. In the case of a tornado watch, this DOES NOT mean that a tornado has been seen or even indicated on radar...it just means that conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes in thunderstorms. Similarly, a severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions are just conducive for the development of severe weather, and DOES NOT indicate that severe weather has been reported. While no immediate action on the part of the general public is required for the issuance of a watch, citizens should keep up to date on the current weather situation and be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.

A WARNING, on the other hand, requires more immediate action and should be taken seriously. A severe thunderstorm warning indicates that severe weather is imminent in your area or is already occurring (based on either human observation or doppler radar). The term severe refers to hail greater than or equal to 1.00" in diameter and/or wind gusts that meet or exceed 58 mph. Although these storms can also be associated with dangerous cloud to ground lightning or heavy rainfall that is capable of causing flash flooding, neither of these two items serve as criteria for a severe thunderstorm warning being issued.

Does Your Hobart Home Have A Mold Problem?

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County professionals can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Equipment Used For Water Removal

6/13/2019 (Permalink)

If you have ever experienced water damage in your home or business, you have seen some of our equipment. What is that big wand thing? What is that noisy thing? How are you going to remove ALL that water?  SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County has a variety of extraction equipment to provide sufficient water removal.  Here is a quick overview of what we use to answer any of your questions:

  • Extraction Units-removes excess water
    • Small portable units are smaller and flexible and can be taken into any area of a building. They require electricity so power in the structure is necessary or will need to use a generator.
    • Truck-mounted extractors offer a more powerful vacuum. It runs off of the vehicles fuel, so power in the facility is not necessary. This machine is extremely loud and it does have some limitations. For instance, the hose length could be tricky to tackle a multi-level structure.
    • Light wands or “carpet wands” are appropriate for removing water from carpet
  • Deep Extraction Tools-attachments for the extractors
    • Self propelled are powered by an independent motor that moves over the carpet at a consistent rate. They compress the carpet and pad, squeeze out water, and removes the water through the vacuum system.
    • Stationary tools extract water from carpet and pad using the weight of the technician standing on the device. A vacuum system is attached and pulls water through small holes on the base of the unit. They are available in various sizes.
  • Pumps
    • Self-priming trash pumps are powered with gas or diesel. They offer easy access if they become clogged and they are very portable. They are used when water needs to be transferred horizontally, and are useful for removing water from single-story structures.
    • High pressure pumps are designed to provide high pressure and are useful for pumping out underground structures, like basements and parking garages.
    • Electric submersible pumps are the most common type used in water restoration. They provide continuous and quiet operation. They eliminate the suction lift limitations and run on electricity.

This was just a brief summary of our equipment. We would be more than happy to go into detail with you about any of our equipment or services. Please call SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County with any questions or concerns. 219-947-9931

Fire Restoration Safety

6/10/2019 (Permalink)

After a fire, our technicians want to get to work right away to help get your home to its pre-fire condition.  But safety for our technicians and anyone else that will be on site is our main concern.  Safety hazards are present at every fire damage work site.  We need to take safety concerns seriously and need to address them properly before starting.  Every fire damage is different so our highly trained technicians will take time to identify and resolve safety hazards before proceeding with the project.   Doing restoration work in fire-damaged buildings is potentially dangerous.  Some hazards that call for technicians to exercise special precaution are:

  • Electrical Hazards
    • Fire-damaged work sites are frequently wet if water was used to extinguish the fire. Mixing water and electricity is extremely dangerous!
  • Structural Hazards
    • Fire often causes damage to the structure of the building. The technicians will be cautious of loose or falling debris.
  • Slip, Trip, and Fall
    • Slip or fall accidents are a common cause of injuries. These can be avoided by following some simple preventative measures.

SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County technicians are highly trained for fire restoration.  They will plan ahead for a safe work process.  This may take a little extra time and we appreciate your patience during this difficult situation.

Smoke Damage

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

A fire damage in your home is devastating. Whether it’s big or small, the smoke may damage a large part of your home and belongings. Smoke damage can do more damage than the actual fire. SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County technicians are highly trained in Fire Cleanup and Restoration. Performing fire damage restoration involves both removing the smoke residues and also deodorizing smoke odors. The odors in a smoke-damaged building will be considerably decreased once the affected materials are demolished and removed or cleaned. The actual cleaning and deodorization procedures will vary depending on whether the smoke residues are light, medium, or heavy. Our technicians will assess the situation and go from there. We want to make this fire damage like it never even happened.

If you have experienced a fire in your home, please call SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County at -219-947-9931.

Good Mold?

6/23/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a complicated substance because in some cases in can be beneficial and others harmful. Many of us were taught to believe that mold is bad.  Especially us at SERVPRO of Eastern Lake County. And that is because we encounter the mold growth in homes that causes property damage and health issues. But today we are going to discuss some interesting facts about what scientists consider good mold. HOWEVER, mold growing in your home is NEVER a good thing and you need to contact us immediately.

  • Some mold is good for you. The active ingredient in Penicillin is Penicillium mold. It's effective because it kills many types of bacteria.
  • Mold is good for your garden. Certain types of mold can speed up decomposition process to help keep soil healthy.
  • Mold and Mildew are different. They are each a type of fungus but they have several differences. Mildew only grows on surfaces while mold can grow beneath surfaces. Mildew is much easier to remove.

It's interesting to see that mold can be something beneficial! We are so used to seeing mold cause more damage than good.

Mold Information

6/28/2017 (Permalink)

What are molds?

Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. No one knows how many species of fungi exist but estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps hundred thousands or more. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores. Mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dry conditions, that do not support normal mold growth.

Where are molds found?

Molds are found in almost every environment and can be detected, both indoors and outdoors. Mold growth is encouraged by warm and humid conditions. Outdoors they can be found in shady, damp areas or places where leaves or other vegetation is decomposing. Indoors they can be found where humidity levels are high, such as basements or showers.

What To Do After A Fire

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

What NOT To Do After A Fire

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting us.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
  • Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

10 Key Fire Safety Tips

6/6/2017 (Permalink)

Watch vs. Warning

6/1/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Odor Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home.

4/21/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot damage in a Crown Point, Indiana home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action in your Lake County home.

Smoke and soot facts:
Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Does your home have a mold problem?

4/21/2017 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours. Mold in a Merrillville, Indiana home.

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your Lake County home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training equipment and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – (219)947-9931
